Happy Slapowitz's Toy Bash is just around the corner
Thursday, Dec. 8
Filling
up an empty toy sack for kids who might not otherwise receive Christmas
gifts is especially fun for adults too when they get involved in "The
Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash," held Thursday night, December 8th at seven
downtown pubs. Eight bands will supply you with music to get your party
on--and with your admission of $10 or a new, unwrapped toy, you'll get a
wristband that lets you check out all the entertainment at every
location!Purchase a Happy Slapowitz's 2011 T-shirt for $20 and you'll
get into all the clubs for FREE!
It doesn't end there though. At each club there will be raffles for
prizes valued at over $600. One of the prizes is a St. Louis Schlafly
Brewery Tour for a group of 10. Raffle prizes will be different at
each club. Check the Toy Bash Facebook page for updates.
The Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash helps the Marines Toys for Tots Program,
which has been around for more than six decades! The toy campaign
provides Christmas gifts to needy children in the Cape Girardeau
community and nationwide too. Last year the Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash
raised $7,500 in cash and toy donations. This year the goal is $10,000.
The Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash, in its 10th year, was founded by Ryan
Eftink, a sales associate for Double D Supply and part owner of Smokin
Brothers. He got the idea off the ground by having a toy donation party
that included tasty barbecue at his home back in 2001. The toy donation
party met with so much enthusiasm that he had to move the location to
one that could accommodate more givers!
The next year it moved to Rude Dog Pub where the addition of live,
musical entertainment drew an even larger group of givers. Still
offering that great barbecue--from 6 to 8 pm--this year's menu includes
pulled pork, BBQ baked beans, cole slaw and baked potato casserole
provided by Smokin Brothers. "We are cooking for six out of the seven
bars this year," said Ryan.
"The main reason for the toy donation is that I felt that the charity
helped a human being that cannot help themselves, a child," said Ryan.
"The children cannot help that their parents cannot make enough money to
give them presents or may spend their money foolishly." The idea of
giving a gift to someone that truly has no control of his or her plight,
seems to have a wide appeal when you appreciate the growth this event
has seen in a decade.
Ryan said the generosity of club sponsorship and donations combined with
that of area businesses is strong and that with the 25 people involved
in managing the event, he's pretty confident they'll reach the goal of
raising $10,000 in cash and toy donations.
The event was named The Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash last year as a way of
showing appreciation for all the Rude Dog patrons who have been
supportive since the beginning. The story behind the name is that owners
Mark & Todd couldn't agree on naming the bar and even though the
Happy Slapowitz name appears above the familiar Rude Dog sign, everyone
just kind of remembers Rude Dog. It seemed appropriate to name the toy
bash for the longtime supporter.
With the expanded entertainment and clubs for you to enjoy, organizers
are pleased to know more kids will be remembered at Christmas instead of
otherwise being left out. And despite rough economic times, the
primary mission of Happy Slapowitz's Toy Bash is to deliver, through a
new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters
that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic
citizens.
Clubs participating are Rude Dog Pub, The Library, Pour House, Buckners
Brewing Co., Roxy's, Lodo's and Mixin 10. Here's a preview of the bands
Mike Renick Band, The Intention, Headley Grange, The Lodo's Jazz
quartet, Human Zoo, Ashley Taylor and Us Instead.
