Cape Girardeau Roller Girls Claim Victory
~The following is an update on Southeast Missouri's only roller derby team, from CGRG President and Head of PR, Bobbie Soxx~

Early Saturday morning (1 am!) the Roller Girls kicked off their road trip to Omaha, NE, via charter bus. The night drive was full of bonding and attempted sleep, most of the girls catching much-needed naps once checked in to the hotels (kindly provided by ORG). The game itself, a double header with opening exhibition game between Cape and AAA followed by a WFTDA-level bout between Oklahoma Victory Dolls and Omaha All-Stars, took place at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, IA. After checking in and experiencing the wonderful hospitality of ORG, the Roller Girls got ready to roll.

After obtaining lead jammer status in the first jam, and securing a nice lead early on, CGRG was overwhelmed, not only with the feeling of being ahead, with wanting to stay ahead, but with wanting our fans to share in this moment. At halftime, the score was 55 to 23, Cape in the lead.

ORG came back strong with hard hits and strategy, but CGRG maintained the lead, pulling through to a close finish of 85 to 83. At the after party, Billie Lux was awarded MVP, and after showing off her enthusiastic “Thriller” reenactment, Alice Skullen was given a trophy declaring CGRG not only winners of the game, but winners of the after party.

Sunday night marked CGRG’s return home, to a water-logged Southeast Missouri, tired, sore, and victorious. Keep an eye on this post and Facebook for pictures from the trip and bout. Thank you for your unrelenting support. Mark your calendars for the next home bout, August 6 against Clarksville, TN’s Red River Sirens!--

“The connection that the CGRG has is not something that can be formed overnight. We sweat hard and we laugh hard. I’ve gained something by joining this team that I didn’t know I was missing. These girls are amazing teammates and friends. There is not a single story or background that is the same—which I think makes this sport unique. We have all learned from each other and our own experiences as members of the CGRG.”
