Local Man Helps Mission to Pluto

NEWS

Everyone has been following the updates from New Horizons and the amazing new photos of Pluto, but did you know that a Southern Illinois native plays a big role in the project? Gabe Rogers of Christopher, Illinois is the guidance and control lead engineer for New Horizons.

"As guidance and control lead, I'm responsible for the pointing of the space craft," Rogers said. "So I orient the instruments in space so that we are able to take the pictures."

Rogers has a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Illinois. He sees reaching Pluto as living his dream, "You can come from a very, very, very small town of 2,000 people in the middle of southern Illinois, or you can come from New York City or you can come from where ever," Rogers said. "But if this is a passion of yours, follow it."
