Kent Library Celebrates 75 Years with Special Events

“A library is the heart of the institution it serves.”

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University. Kent Library would like to invite everyone on campus and in the community to celebrate with along with them. Come visit the library for any or all of their public events.

Upcoming Events

Is Mark Twain Relevant Today?

Presented by Henry Sweets, Executive Director/Education Coordinator of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal, Missouri

Thursday, September 4 at 7pm, Sadie's Place inside Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University

Sweets will examine how Twain has changed American literature and how he continues to resonate today. The program will also trace Sam Clemens’ life and influences that shaped his writing. Desserts and refreshments will be served, and this presentation is open to the public. See the flyer below for complete details.

This program is part of Kent Library’s 75th Anniversary Celebration and sponsored in part by a generous grant from the Missouri Humanities Council.

As the library celebrates 75 years, it is only fitting that a presentation on Twain is included. In his book, Life on the Mississippi, Twain mentions Southeast's Normal Building: “There was another college higher up on an airy summit—a bright new edifice, picturesquely and peculiarly towered and pinnacled—a sort of gigantic casters, with the cruets all complete.” That building is now the newly remodeled Academic Hall of Southeast Missouri State University.

Kent Library and its Special Collections and Archives continue to provide access to the literature of Twain:  texts, databases, and other valuable sources of information for students and the community at large. Kent has helped the university continue to be that bright edifice on the summit, providing education for students from Missouri, other states, and the international community.
