Game on: SIU’s new Esports Arena will open Aug.16

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A new era of competition and gaming is coming to Southern Illinois University Carbondale with the unveiling of the long anticipated Esports Arena.

Set on the first floor of the Student Center, the 1,200 square foot facility will launch Aug. 16 with an open house and welcome. The festivities will be from 3 to 5 p.m, with Chancellor John M. Dunn conducting the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

As one of the fastest growing sports in the world, esports is quickly developing into a billion dollar industry with more than 300 million fans worldwide. Collegiate teams, tournaments and competitions are springing up across the nation, with SIU’s new arena offering more opportunities for the local and campus gaming community.

Southeast Missouri State University alumna Erica Robbins is always looking for unique opportunities that can broaden her own and her students’ cultural competency and education.

Southeast Student Combining Passion for Theatre, Public Relations at Stage773


Southeast Missouri State University student Francesca Bucci is combining her passion for comedy and public relations this summer as a marketing and design intern at Stage773 in Chicago, Illinois.

Bucci, a senior double majoring in mass media, public relations option, and theatre, acting option, from Gurnee, Illinois, says she feels right at home on the stage, bringing beloved characters to life and even making audiences laugh and forget their worries for a little while. But there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the curtain, and Bucci is getting a front row seat to see what it takes to run a successful performance and tenant venue.


River Campus Announces 2019-2020 Season Lineup

Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus announces the event lineup for an astonishing season of music, art, theatre and museum exhibits during the 2019-2020 season.

The 13th River Campus season will offer a spectacular breadth of performing arts events by Southeast’s departments of music, art and design, The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance, and the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum.


Southeast Housing Illinois National Guard During Flood Recovery

More than 160 Illinois National Guard troops are being housed in Vandiver Hall at Southeast Missouri State University while they work in southern Illinois to help with sandbagging efforts to protect communities from devastating flooding.

About 80 soldiers arrived last weekend and another 80 were activated and arrived Thursday to help fight continued flooding in East Cape Girardeau, McClure and other communities in southern Illinois. The soldiers have filled more than 100,000 sandbags and are providing transport for citizens with medical emergencies in McClure to area hospitals, according to Staff Sgt. Shawn Gillison.

The Economic and Business Engagement Center at Southeast Missouri State University will host a LaunchU class this summer for aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs.

Enrollment is now open for the next LaunchU, sponsored by EboMD, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays from June 28-July19 at the Economic and Business Engagement Center at 920 Broadway in Cape Girardeau.


‘Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical’ presents a colorful history lesson for audiences of all ages

“Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical” as part of its 2019 professional summer season at Carbondale’s Southern Illinois University. “Polkadots” opens on June 8 and runs select Wednesdays and Saturdays through July 20. 


Woman opens door for more music venues in Cape Girardeau


CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Cape G Rocks is a newly formed organization that provides music events in Cape Girardeau.

Heartland News talked with Cape G Rocks Founder Shawn Wood who has spearheaded music events in Cape Girardeau since the organization's first house event in November of 2018.

Wood said Cape Girardeau has venues that are actively bringing in artists to the city and she hopes that Cape G Rocks will add to that giving Southeast Missourians more opportunities to attend different music events.
