Craft Beer Festival

By Heather Capriola

Community Counseling Center is hosting their 2nd Annual Craft Beer Festival on October 5th from 12-4pm.  The Festival is being held at the SEMO Fairground Bank of America Arena. Admission is $30 in advance and $35 at the gate.  Included in admission is a free tasting glass, tastes from over 25 different microbreweries in the area, hourly prize drawings, and music by Jerry Ford German Band.  All proceeds from the festival benefit the Community Counseling Foundation and will be used to provide improved facilities, equipment, and services for people with mental illness.

Sounds like fun, right? Music, beer, and a great cause but what exactly is craft beer? What makes craft beer different from “regular” beer?  Craft beer is determined to be such by three main characteristics: made by a small brewer, brewed by an independent brewer, and is traditional in that more than 50% of the brewer’s volume comes from all malt beer.  A small brewer is defined as a brewer that has less than 6 million barrels in their annual production.  Being an independent brewer means that less than 25% of the brewery comes from a non-craft brewer.  What this means for you is that the beer is much more flavorful than traditional beer. Craft beer has more complexity and uniqueness than mass produced beer. Another great thing about craft beer is that there are so many different styles, you are sure to find one that you like.  Don’t be afraid to ask the brewers  about different types and styles to ensure that you find one (or several) that you like.  Last year, I attended the festival as a complete craft beer novice and through speaking with several of the brewers, walked away with a newfound appreciation of the artistry of craft beer as well as a new favorite that has a permanent residence in my refrigerator-Abita Purple Haze.

So mark your calendars for October 5th and attend the 2nd Annual Craft Beer Festival.  You are sure to have a great time listening to music, learning about craft beer, and tasting an extensive array of beer.  Even better, you’ll be helping a great cause!
