A Hop and A Hamburger Away: Mary Jane Burgers and Brews

“You have got to try this place, it is amazing!” These words were repeated to me numerous times by different people over the course of the past 6 months. Hearing such praise caused quite the curiosity as to what and who could possibly be causing people from Cape Girardeau to be raving about a restaurant located 40 minutes away in Perryville, MO.

I took the occasion of covering the Budweiser Clydesdales at Bikers on the Square to find out for myself what was so fantastic about Mary Jane Burgers & Brew. So many people were in town and a large number of them wanted to eat in Mary Jane so my opportunity came at a time when most small town restaurants would be stressed to the max at best or disastrously overwhelmed at worst.
I was thoroughly impressed with the staff of Mary Jane Burgers & Brew while under pressure. We did have a short wait to be seated which was to be expected (the River Eagle group was 11 in number) and the place was near capacity.
While waiting for a table we sat at their long bar stocked with over 20 different beers, 10 of which were on tap. We were served by John who did a great job taking care of a packed bar as well as servers placing drink orders.
The dining service was a tad long but the servers were friendly, moving fast and doing their best to take care of a full house. For a few of the River Eagle gang the wait provided an opportunity to challenge each other to a game of beer pong. Yes, Mary Jane has a beer pong table, located at the front of the second dining room, right next to the large glass wall making it visible from the street.
The wait proved worth it when the food arrived as it appeared everyone enjoyed their selection. I had The Barn Burger which was ground beef topped with apple-smoked bacon, guacamole and a sunny side up egg. Loved the home style French fries too!
There are so many different burgers to try, the choice is difficult and you will be compelled to make many repeat visits until you try them all. Of course by then you will want to start at the beginning and most likely there will be a few new burgers on the menu. I would not let our experience regarding wait time concern you as I am sure on any given, normal day the wait for seating as well as food will be much shorter.
I now know why this great, locally owned restaurant is worth the drive and why so many are raving about Mary Jane Burgers & Brew. I am also curious about the inspiration behind this business, owner Carisa Stark. Unfortunately Carisa will have to be the focus of another story; oh darn, guess I’m going back to Perryville and Mary Jane Burgers & Brew!
