Brewing Up Fun and Craft Beer at Minglewood Brewery

Minglewood barMinglewood Brewery is a unique addition to Cape Girardeau’s Downtown. The atmosphere is warm and rustic, with a cherry and walnut wood bar and a hint of antique from the Edison bulbs hanging from the ceiling. Owner Stuart Matthews says this comfy and inviting aesthetic is just what he was going for, a place to wind-down with conversation, good food, and of course, good beer.

The loss of Buckners left a brewery-shaped hole in Cape’s heart, one that Matthews wanted to fill. “Craft beer is big on the east and west coast, and it’s starting to come to the south.” Taking advantage of that popularity, Matthews hired local brewer Tony Johnson who works tirelessly in the brewery in the back, creating craft beer every day. Matthews said they had eight to ten beers on tap, all made in-house, with guest beers from local breweries on tap as well. Right now they are featuring a refreshing strawberry-blonde from Charleville Vineyard in Ste. Genevieve.  And for those who miss their growlers Minglewood offers them for purchase along with refills and half-sized bullets.

Craft beer isn’t the only delicious thing in Minglewood’s repertoire, their big menu item is a variety of 10” pizzas, from Tony Johnson in the brewerytraditional toppings, to goat cheese, pulled pork, portabella mushrooms, and a medley of other unique toppings. Their biggest deal is a pint and a pie for ten bucks, or if you want to sample a bunch of beer order up a flight with four 5-ounce samples to try. Matthews said changes are coming to the menu, with the possibility of a taco pizza, and philly cheese steak pizza.

Other changes coming from the brewery include outdoor seating just in time for the warm season. Tony will start giving tours of the brewery soon, to show off the equipment and show people how a craft beer is made. Minglewood also hosts plenty of live music entertainment, with open mic night on Wednesdays, and local musicians on Thursdays. One of the things Matthews stresses is the support of locals, while also bringing in new tastes and sounds from other areas.

With fun-loving staff, excellent food, a love for the local, and a convenient parking lot right across the street, Minglewood is shaping up to be one of Cape’s new favorite places. And with a private Pub Snug, and smoke-free facilities it’s perfect for the family too. When asked about his goal for the future Matthews is simple and sincere, “To give people quality beer, good food, and good service. That’s the ultimate goal.” Matthews is well on his way, and is fitting in well on 121 Broadway in Downtown Cape.
