Hoops for Life Recap

by Becky Davenport

Over 650 folks of all ages hit the streets this past Saturday in honor of Sahara Aldridge for the 3rd Annual Hoops for Life, and while many of the participants are dedicated runners, the spirit of this race makes it more than just a race.

As I sat down to write my recap of the race and finish up the slideshow of photos, I clicked over to Facebook page and saw Sahara’s mom Amy Aldridge’s status, I won’t quote it all, but she stated “Years are just a number - love never dies”. She could not say it better, while we know she means a parent’s love never dies, it is easy to see that the love for Sahara has just grown. The love displayed Saturday at both the race and the concert is just breathtaking. When Rick Springfield sang his song “Saint Sahara”, I did not see a dry eye in the house, and I am the first to confess that at that moment I wish I had remembered my tissues.

To the Aldridge Family, I think I can easily speak for all of us here at; we admire your fight, your willingness to give and keep on giving, and your spirit; you may have fought some tears, but that glow in your eyes comes from your heart. I can honestly say it is hard to find words to describe the admiration that I have for you all.

To you runners, while I traded in my running shoes this year for my camera and an injured toe, I envied and admired you as you passed by. You all laced up your shoes and hit the streets on one of the hottest days of the year for the toughest course I have ever seen. While we may think that we are just taking a few hours out on a Saturday to have some fun and run a race, we are actually buying some time, taking big steps, and helping some child fight that evil battle we call cancer. This is the 3rd year that I have attended at Hoops for Life and while the numbers just keep growing, the spirit and excitement grows way beyond those numbers.

Hoops for Life is held the 3rd Saturday of July and rather I am out there holding a camera capturing you all in your race or beside you running, I look forward to this great event again next year.
