Running 5's, Touching Lives

by Sue Stiegemeyer

Calendars everywhere are packed full of 5Ks for a cause - cancer awareness, commemorating annual events, and to help families devastated by homelessness, natural disasters, and other unforeseen circumstances. A new one hits the recreation scene this year aimed at funding youth and adults in efforts to share Christ through action and word in honor of a young woman who aimed to do just that.

The Jennifer Stiegemeyer Angel Memorial Fund is hosting their First Annual JSAMF 5K Run/Walk on September 29th, starting at 9:00 AM at the Jackson City Park band shell pavilion. All of the monies raised will go directly to the Fund and will continue to support those who wish to serve Christ by serving others.

The history of the Fund is very straightforward and the reason behind it resonates well with people here in Southeast Missouri. Jennifer was born and raised in Jackson and she grew into a young woman who loved her Lord and wanted to serve Him by serving others. She volunteered at every opportunity at her home church of St. Paul Lutheran and her service continued into her college career. As a student at Truman State, she was active with the LSF on campus and touched many lives there in the name of Christ. Then God called her home on May 23rd, 2001. You might think that her service here was over – but that simply is not true.

Through the Fund that bears her name, people have traveled all around the world. They have touched lives and healed hearts all in the name and through the power of Christ – the same Lord Jennifer served with such joy. Some examples from 2011 are: helping with community projects in Birmingham, England; building and repairing homes in Juarez, Mexico; doing irrigation construction in Panama; conducting VBS and visiting orphanages in Haiti; offering medical assistance in the tribal regions of Vietnam; ministering to young girls and women rescued from human trafficking in Cambodia; and, closer to home, continuing with the rebuild in New Orleans; and ministering to disabled adults in Nebraska.
