Jackson Shines Bright With Holiday Extravaganza

Marco Otten is president of the Jackson Community Outreach Board - the organization responsible for the Holiday Extravaganza. He expressed his excitement for the new tradition, “We wanted a Christmas event, anything that improves the quality of life for our residences.”

The Jackson Holiday Extravaganza is a holiday light display with decorated trees and scenes in Jackson City Park, starting at the swimming pool and running down Hubble Creek to the tennis courts. Otten said that Christmas lights will be wrapped around the trees and make a canopy over the bridge.

Two celebrations are planned as well. The first is the official Flip the Switch Party where the public is invited to the park to watch the lights come on. There will be carriage rides, a train for the kids, and food vendors as well. A giant light switch will be set up at the Hubble Creek Bridge for the light-up ceremony. The party takes place November 27 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The second celebration is a Santa Event where Santa Claus will attend the Extravaganza and visit with children for their Christmas wishes. Santa will be there December 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The Holiday Extravaganza will run each night through the new year from dusk to dawn. Otten says this is made possible by the generous donations and sponsors that have supported the event, “the city pays the electric bill, but the rest is donations. We want to expand the light show each year, and the more donations we get, the bigger we can make the Extravaganza.”

Otten says that eventually they want to fill the entire park so that people can walk or drive through and enjoy the Christmas lights. He says that the focal point of the lights will be the Hubble Creek Bridge where there will be a mailbox for letters to Santa, and a giving tree.

“We want to make Jackson a holiday destination,” Otten said, “we don’t get a lot of new holiday things in the area. The lights at Cape North have the same displays every year, we wanted something big and new.”

Otten is confident that this big and new tradition will be a success, “People are going to love it . . . they’re going to drive into Jackson not knowing what hit them.”

The lights come on the day after Thanksgiving at 5:00 p.m. They’ll stay on each night to the new year.
