Good Luck and True Love with Reckless Kelly

by Becky Davenport

That’s Rock. That’s Old School. That’s Reckless Kelly. The Texas band Reckless Kelly is heading our way this month for the annual John D. Hale Band Barn Party.

Reckless Kelly, led by brothers Willy and Cody Braun, formed in Bend, Oregon and then relocated to Austin, Texas in 1996. They added in Jay Nazz on the drums, David Abeyta as lead guitar and vocals, and Chris Scheleske as bass and vocals. Once in Texas, the band packed a small bar and restaurant called Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar with their Monday night show. It is said the band turned this small bar into a noted music venue with their infamous Monday night show.

Reckless Kelly’s debut album “Millican” officially released in 1998 and their latest album “Good Luck & True Love” released in 2011 selling over 20,000 copies. Reckless Kelly has received Grammy Nomination for Best Recording Package, American Roots Album of the Year, and says the album “Good Luck & True Love is one of the finest examples ever of a fully conceptualized album in the Red Dirt genre”. says, “If you like your country spiked with some good old fashioned rock, you’ll get intoxicated on Good Luck & True Love”.

The Reckless Kelly boys along with our Missouri boys Powder Mill, and the lovely Dani Flowers will kick off the John D Hale Barn Party at the 5-H Camel Ranch on Friday, August 24th, 2012. Other upcoming show dates for the band include Nashville TN, Chicago IL, and Norman Oklahoma. Head over to their website for a complete list of their upcoming shows, listen to some of their tunes, I will note my favorite is “She Likes Money, He Likes Love” off their Good Luck & True Love album.
