Heroes Take to Frigid Water in Polar Plunge

Polar Plunge 2016A bunch of people in costumes jumping into a freezing lake in February might sound like madness to some, but for Polar Plunge Cape Girardeau these mad men and women are heroes raising money for the Special Olympics.

This year’s Polar Plunge saw 175 participants jumping into Lake Boutin at the Trail of Tears State Park on Saturday. The weather was on their side with sunny skies and a water temperature of 45 degrees - not bad for the beginning of February.

Plungers included a variety of volunteers, some as individuals and families, others were business groups, like Isle Casino who came dressed the part in superhero costumes, complete with capes and masks.

The costume contest is a big part of the Polar Plunge. With the nickname ‘below zero-heroes’ superhero costumes are a popular choice. This year characters like The Incredibles, Captain America, and Green Lantern made an appearance. Even some furry heroes made the plunge. The costume contest winners was a group of Minions from the film ‘Despicable Me.’

Rick and Dana of Arcadia Valley said of the experience, “It’s fantastic, and invigorating for sure.” The two were drying off in front of the changing tent after their plunge. Dana added, “It’s a crazy thing for a good cause.”

While plungers ran into the water, then quickly ran back out, some wearing nothing but swimming trunks, the fire department put their insulated water suits to the test, lounging in the water with ease and acting as lifeguards for the plungers. Despite the cold, spirits were high as high fives were passed around, laughs were shared, and a good time was had by all.

All proceeds from the Polar Plunge go to the Special Olympics Missouri. Take a look at the plunge in our photo album
