International Food Series: India

In this  series we’ll look at local restaurants that offer food you normally wouldn’t be able to try without a very long airplane ride. Tuck in your napkin and grab a fork, today we’re getting a taste of India.


Indian food is known for it’s unique style of cooking with a medley of spices and sauces that promote strong flavors that range from spicy to floral. They use a traditional clay oven to cook their dishes.

At Namaskar in Cape Girardeau, patrons can peruse the buffet and try a little bit of everything. Some traditional dishes include buttered chicken or tikka massala. Namaskar loves cooking with mangos, and has a mango fruit cocktail, or mango chicken to try.

Located inside West Park Mall across from Orange Monkey, Tandoor Indian Bar and Grill offers atmospheric dining with a full menu of curries, tandoori dishes, dosa, desserts, and, of course, a side of naan bread. Patrons can take in the full experience of an Indian meal by reserving one of their low tables for floor seating.

If you’re in Southern Illinois visit Reema’s Indian Cuisine in Carbondale. They offer delicacies from both Northern and Southern India. You can try their chicken reema with a side of garlic naan bread.
