Veteran's Day Events in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois

On our nation's holiday to honor all who have served in the military, there are many local events for communities to celebrate these individuals.  If you are looking for something to do this Veteran’s Day, look no further for events specific to Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.  With many ceremonies and activities going on, it’s hard to decide where to go and what to do.  Whatever you do on this holiday, please don’t forget what it’s all about.  Remember it’s a holiday which honors people who have served in armed services and deserve recognition on this day and every day of the year.


Here is a list of things to do over this Veteran’s Day holiday:


Veterans on Parade on 11/11

Marion, IL.  Starting point is Marion Jr. High School on west Main St. and ends on North Market St. 
To honor all the men & women veterans in southern Illinois, participants will be units from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and National Guard and Iraqi veterans, along with many high school bands.  Visit http://www.veteransonparade  for more information. 


Veterans Day Parade on 11/11

Anna, IL (Downtown Anna). 
Begins at 2 p.m. from the city park entrance on Davie St and follows Main St to Jefferson St. and back to the park.


Third Annual Veterans' Appreciation Tailgate on 11/9

SIU Campus
Shawnee Detachment #812, Marine Corps League is hosting the third annual Veterans' Appreciation Tailgate on Saturday, November 9, 2013, beginning at 10am at the SIU Tailgate area. This event is open to all veterans and active duty military, is free and being held in conjunction with Saluki Football's Military Appreciation game against Missouri State University. There will be numerous Veteran and Military service organizations on hand with information. Food and beverages will be provided. Free game tickets to all veterans and active duty military. Discount game tickets will also be available to family members.

Veteran’s Day Ceremony on 11/10

Galatia, IL
From 2pm-3:30 pm, the event will include some singing and some speakers. The Cub Scouts from Pack 8 out of Galatia, Illinois will be raising the American flag and saying the pledge. We encourage everyone to come and see this great event.


Veteran’s Day Ceremony on 11/11

Veterans Memorial Plaza, Carbondale, IL at @ VFW Post 2605 at 11am. 


A Salute to Vets concert on 11/10

Marion, IL (the Marion Cultural and Civic Center @ 2pm)
The concert is part of the Southern Illinois Homeless Assistance Concerts.  The event will feature local performers raising funds for veteran’s services in the area.  Previous groups receiving funds include the Williamson County Family Crisis Center, the indigent fund at the VA Hospital and the Carterville Family Practice. This year funds will also go to the Marion Soup Kitchen.  Some of the performers include the Joy Singers of The First Baptist Church in Marion, pianist Emmanuel Simmons and a color guard featuring Marion High School students.  Concertgoers are asked to bring photos of service people, if the veterans can’t be at the concert.  Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children, ages 5-12 and veterans are admitted free.  For more information, go to or call 618-997-4030.


Veteran’s recognized during Sunday morning service on 11/10

Pinckneyville First Baptist Church, 105 South Mill Street, Pinckneyville, IL.
Pinckneyville First Baptist Church will recognize our veterans for the area during our Morning Worship. We would love for all veterans to join us. The service begins at 10:10am.


Veteran’s Day Ceremony on 11/11

Freedom Corner in Cape Girardeau, MO
A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at Freedom Corner in Capaha Park at 11:00am. An Eagle Scout will play TAPS, Dennis Woeltje will be the guest speaker. There will be a flag ceremony.


Redhawks Football Military Appreciation Day on 11/9

Houck Stadium Cape Girardeau, MO
Redhawks Football vs. Tennessee Tech at Missouri National Guard Field at Houck Stadium.
Two FREE admissions for all active, reserve and veteran military personnel with service I.D. There will be different military tributes throughout the game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. with FREE tailgating in front of the stadium, starting at 11 a.m.


Veteran’s Honor Service on 11/10

First Pentecostal Church Cape Girardeau, MO
First Pentecostal Church will hold its 14th annual veterans honor service at 11:00am. There will be an avenue of flags, each dedicated to a solider living or deceased, an extensive display of over 90 veterans photos and biographies, who are all connected to the church congregation, and with American flags of all shapes, sizes and flags of all branches of service including the 9/11 tribute flag and the POW flag. The guest speaker will be Commander Sgt. Major Bill Adams, National Guard ret., and post commander of American Legion Post 63. There will be a homage to the branches of the service by trumpeter Army veteran Larry Herron, color guard by American Legion Post 63, flag line by the Patriot Guard Riders, an antique military vehicle display by the SEMO Military Vehicles Group, MIA tribute delivered by Vietnam veteran Ted Jackson and Cape Girardeau Fire Department's ladder truck with its 40 feet American flag. All are welcome.


Veteran’s Assembly on 11/9

Oran High School Oran, MO
A Veteran's assembly will be held at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11 in the Oran High School Gymnasium to honor all those who served honorably in the military. All veterans are welcome to attend. Please call 573-262-3435 for more information.


Veteran’s Day Lunch on 11/11

Chaffee Nutrition Center, Chaffee, MO
The Chaffee Nutrition Center and the United Steel Workers Local 7686 will host a Veteran's Day lunch at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11. Veterans, spouses and the general public are invited to attend.


Veteran’s Day Assembly on 11/11

Cape Girardeau Central Junior High, Cape Girardeau, MO
A Veterans Day ceremony will be held in the school auditorium at 12:30 pm. Community veterans are welcome. Students and staff invited members or friends who have served in the military to join them.


Veterans Recognition Program on 11/8
Charleston High School Student Commons, Charleston, MO
A Veterans Day Recognition Program will be held Nov. 8, in the school’s Student Commons at 9:00 a.m. All veterans are encouraged to attend.


Veterans Day Parade and Service on 11/11

Uptown Jackson, MO

Sponsored by the American Legion, The Veteran Day Parade will start at 4:00 p.m. and go through uptown Jackson. Following right after the Parade, New McKendree Methodist Church will be holding a service honoring veterans.


Honoring All Who Served
Black River Coliseum, Poplar Bluff, MO
The Poplar Bluff Veterans Council is proud to present a program in honor of all Veterans of ALL wars Nov. 11 at starting at 11:00 a.m. There will be several guest speakers including Larry Kimbrow, Jeffrey Pennington and Henry Priest. The Pledge of Allegiance will be said, The National Anthem will be sung, and there will be a 21 gun salute.


Flag Displays

Jackson, MO Brookside Park and Cape Girardeau, Cape County Park

Flags will be on display at these locations throughout the day. Volunteers are needed in Jackson at 2pm and Cape at 4pm to help take the flags down and prepare them for storage until their next display.
