New Coffee Place Invites Patrons to 'STA'

Julie Malone 2016The new STA Cafe has nestled itself on Sprigg Street in Cape Girardeau, looking to serve, not just coffee, but a sense of community.

STA stands for St. Andrews, but is pronounced ‘stay.’ Owner and operator Julie Malone teamed up with the church to provide a space for community outreach. “We want people to feel like they belong here, it’s a community within a community where everyone is invited and can hang out.” She adds that this partnership benefits both the cafe and the church. “My family is congregants at St. Andrews, they wanted to reach out into the community more. They wanted a comfortable, casual setting.”

Everything about the cafe encourages comfort and interaction. The atmosphere is open and spacious with extra long tables for large groups. There are private tables as well, along with cozy armchairs and a shelf of books.

There are also a couple of televisions, but Julie says these are for worship services, which St. Andrews holds every Sunday. “I don’t want them running all day, I would rather patrons communicate and interact.” Julie has plans to hold movie nights in the future.

At the checkout counter patrons can choose from a variety of coffees or take advantage of the full espresso bar. Julie uses ‘Three Avocados,’ a non-profit from St. Louis to get ingredients for her coffee. The money they make goes to supporting those in need in Africa. There are also soups, sandwiches, Taco Wednesday, and locally-made bread. Everything is made in house with fresh ingredients.

Julie has become proactive about starting events for more community involvement, this includes charity. Now STA Cafe 2016through October they are accepting nonperishable food to donate. Instead of a tip jar they have a ‘pay-it-forward’ jar and a chalkboard where people can recommend charities to donate the money.

Julie is also working to set up game nights, which are perfect with their long tables. She also welcomes musicians for open mic nights on Friday and Saturday, and is expecting to get a piano from St. Andrews soon. Next spring she wants to start a community garden next door. She invites any interested parties to contact her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or call 573-803-2272.

All of these plans are about making STA Cafe more than just a coffee shop. The restaurant has already gained many regulars whom Julia has connected with - often sitting and chatting when she has the time, and even when she doesn’t. “Our aspirations here is just to provide a place where people feel welcome, don’t shy away from feeling like they’re family. Where they can get a good meal for a reasonable price, enjoy the ambiance and atmosphere, and friendships that have evolved since we opened.”

New hours for STA Cafe are 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Worship service is held Sundays at 6:30 p.m. They are located at 820 N. Sprigg Street next to Cafe ‘N Me. Learn more at
