Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash 2016

Toys for Tots box of toysYou all wanted it, so the Happy Slapowitz crew is bringing it again for 2016! Not only are there more sponsors than ever before, but there are more bands, more bars, more elves and more food. And when I say more food I mean 600 pounds of pulled pork. As Ryan Eftink of Smokin’ Brothers finishes reading off his list with 50 gallons of baked beans, I find am drifting away thinking about those scrumptious morsels.

Ryan also tells me that there will be about 450 2016 Toy Bash shirts out there for the event on Thursday, December 8th. And I’m reminded of why we are all supporting this cause. The mission of the Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash is to “deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.” The mission of both the Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash and its beneficiary, the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program work in service of a common goal: uniting our communities to deliver a message of hope. The Slapowitz group choose the Toys for Tots program because as Ryan says, “They are set up to distribute the toys really well.” Ryan tells me they cover four counties in our region (Cape, Scott, Bollinger, and Stoddard) and then donate any toys over and above their goals to other local charities.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. David Loyd, Coordinator of the Marine Corps League Det 1081 Toys for Tots program. One thing I can tell you for sure, the Toys for Tots program keeps those involved with it very busy! David explains he is grateful for organizations like Happy Slapowitz that help out every year. David says, “Ryan does a fantastic job for Toys for Tots. Every year they sell t-shirts and collect cash and new, unwrapped toys at the event” The Happy Slapowitz crew takes all the cash to our local Toys R Us to buy cart loads of new toys. David tells me that through the kind and generous support the program receives every year, Toys for Tots is able to give several brand new toys and stocking stuffers to deserving children.

So how does the Happy Slapowitz crew do it all? Well, the organization has come a long way from a simple Christmas party at the Eftink house in 2001. This year 13 bars will open their doors to the community, and 16 bands have agreed to donate their time and talent. Over 50 local business sponsors have donated to the cause. The end result? Great entertainment at our local establishments and raffle baskets filled with goodies. Each location will have a unique giveaway with over $500 worth of prizes.

Ryan explained to me one of the locations has a prize package for up to 20 people that includes barbecue and virtual golf outing. I also hear there will be a photo booth around town to capture all the fund in your toy bash t-shirt or holiday attire.

All of you out there who attend, purchase items or work in service of this event are supporting local businesses, the hardworking men and women of our Marine Corps, and providing hope for families in our region. We here at would like to say thank you to everyone involved! And we can’t wait to see wait to see you on December the 8th!

The Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash starts at 6 pm on Thursday, December 8th.
