‘Mary Poppins’ Cast Delivers Spoonfuls of Sugar to Senior Living Residents

The student cast of “Mary Poppins,” which is coming to Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus Feb. 21-25, took their show on the road last week, much to the delight of residents at the Lutheran Home and Saxony Village in Cape Girardeau.

Twenty-eight students and several faculty members brought “Mary Poppins” to life, performing numbers from the upcoming production, including “Jolly Holiday,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kit” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

“I was very proud of our students Friday, as I am every day,” said Dr. Kenn Stilson, chair of The Conservatory of Theatre and Dance. “They are really very kind and caring people, and it was our pleasure to share a bit of happiness with the residents of Saxony Village and the Lutheran Home.

Lutheran Home residents were treated to numbers from “Mary Poppins.”

Rhonda Weller Stilson, director and associate dean of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, said the students helped deliver spoonfuls of sugar to the senior residents.

“These experiences are so wonderful for our students and the residents, who are always so appreciative to have young people visit and perform,” she said. “It is important for our students to give back to the community. It is something they will take with them forever. We try to not only teach students our art, but also help them become well-rounded and kind citizens.”

The Lutheran Home-Saxony Village is one of The Conservatory’s corporate sponsors for student experiential learning.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time, “Mary Poppins” captures hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical! Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21-24 and 2 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall.

Tickets may be purchased by contacting the River Campus Box Office, located in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Fountain St., weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by calling (573) 651-2265, or online at
