Carbondale Classic Bar to Bar Putt Putt Golf

In fairer weather, it’s typical for a group of friends to get together for a few drinks and a round of golf, but what are we to do when temperatures are nearing record lows and inches of snow and ice blanket the glorious greens? Fortunately, Carbondale Main Street resolved the dilemma by bringing the green indoors to some of Carbondale’s best bars.

March 22nd, 2014 marks the fifth consecutive year for the popular Carbondale Classic, a putt putt golf competition that takes place in participating bars, each responsible for designing a hole for the event. The Carbondale Classic started in 2009 when Carbondale Main Street decided to expand upon an idea from Stadium Grille, a local restaurant at the time. Since its inception, the Carbondale Classic has grown to expect a turnout of 100-120 registered teams. The popularity of the event accounts for the seven hour time frame, 10 am – 5 pm, giving each of the 100 plus teams sufficient time to make it through each hole and still enjoy themselves. Entries for the event extend far beyond the Carbondale area. According to Meghan Cole, Executive Director of Carbondale Main Street, several of the participants are returning competitors that now live out of town but come back to form a team and reconnect with friends. It’s also not uncommon for some teams to enter for the sake of a good time and choose not to submit a scorecard.

Each putt putt team must consist of four golfers (aged 21 and over) and one caddy, the designated driver—safety first, folks! The registration fee for a team is $120, which includes four t-shirts, a Carbondale Classic golf visor for the caddy, a chance for prizes, and a donation to Carbondale Main Street. Teams are scored by using a combined score for each hole. The maximum par for each hole is a par four, and the best nine holes for each team will be used for the total score. Winners will be contacted the following week and will be recognized at the awards party on March 29th. Both the time and location of the awards party will be announced within the week leading up to the event. The location of the awards party will be the participating bar that registers the most teams for the Carbondale Classic. That bar will also choose the time awards party.

Carbondale Main Street will be giving out $1,000 in cash prizes to the prevailing putt putt teams. 1st place will take away $500, 2nd place $300, and 3rd place will receive $200. While it’s nice to have both cash and bragging rights, there are other ways for teams to walk away with prizes. By simply registering for the event, each team is entered into a door prize raffle. Teams can also gain a chance to win prizes by uploading their photos to Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #CDALECLASSIC14. These prizes include items such as gift certificates to local bars and various other businesses.

Those wishing to sign up for the Carbondale Classic can do so online by going to or at a participating bar by March 17th, 2014. This year’s participating bars are: Hangar 9, The Blue Martin, The Carbondale Elks Club, The Global Gourmet, Tres Hombres, The Cellar, Sidetracks, Pinch Penny Pub, Italian Village, Fat Patties and Key West.
